Industrial Plastic Processing

Cutting Plastic Foil

Cut plastic films precisely without a mechanical blade. Futonics thulium fiber lasers combine absorption around 2 µm with controlled energy delivery for narrow cutting lines and automated film removal in packaging and logistics.

Clean cutting without mechanical tools

Many plastic films absorb 2 µm laser radiation efficiently, enabling controlled separation without blades or direct mechanical contact.

This is particularly useful for packaging and automated film removal where the underlying packaging, product or substrate should remain undamaged.

The advantages of 2 µm lasers for plastic films

Controlled absorption and high beam quality enable narrow cutting lines while limiting unnecessary heating of adjacent materials.

Stable output power and contact-free processing support repeatable, automated workflows in packaging, logistics and industrial polymer processing.

Laser cutting compared with knives and blades

Removing transport or protective film with a knife can damage the primary packaging, cardboard or product beneath it. Large packages and palletized goods make manual film removal particularly demanding. Contact-free laser cutting replaces the mechanical blade with controlled energy delivery to the film.

Selective film cutting requires the radiation to interact with the polymer while limiting heating of adjacent materials. Film thickness, absorption, cutting speed and distance to the product are therefore central to application evaluation; avoiding damage depends on a suitable material and process combination.

Automated film removal in packaging and logistics

Our lasers can be used to automatically open and remove film from packaged goods, pallets and shipments. The laser source can be integrated into handling systems so that film separation becomes part of an automated packaging or logistics process rather than a manual cutting operation.

Together with LMS Development Concept and a German engineering company, we have developed solutions for automated film removal, including food-industry applications. Related tasks include opening protective films, cutting technical polymer films and processing thin materials in packaging systems.

Evaluating your film-cutting process

Suitability depends on film material, thickness, absorption, cutting speed, distance to the underlying product and automation requirements. Futonics supports application evaluation and selection of a suitable laser module.
